Training workshops at your library

Last updated:  28 August 2024

State Library PLS staff can visit your library and deliver training to your staff.

The workshops are for staff working in NSW public libraries. They will suit all levels of staff including new public library staff and those seeking to refresh their knowledge.

Legal, drug and alcohol information workshop

This workshop focuses on the statewide Find Legal Answers and Drug Info services available through public libraries across NSW and online. The workshop builds the capacity of public library staff to answer enquiries about the law, drugs and alcohol. It focuses on why clients need to know about the law, drugs and alcohol, where to find information, and how to deliver law, drug and alcohol information programs to the community. The workshop also includes a standard drink demonstration.

The workshop takes 3.5 hours including a short break.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • use plain language, locally available resources to locate legal information
  • assist clients to find information about drugs and alcohol
  • use the Find Legal Answers website to locate legal information
  • use the Drug Info website to locate information about drugs and alcohol
  • refer clients to agencies that offer legal or drug and alcohol advice and assistance
  • use the State Library website to find sources of assistance and information to assist public library staff to deliver services, programs and events to their communities.

Workshop has been engaging, fun and informative.

It was great being able to have free flowing group discussion.

I am much more confident about directing people to relevant info both in the collection and online.

I will look into partnering with organisations to run drug and alcohol events, and incorporate a bit of fun with mocktails at other library events.

Loved the Drug Info bingo as it is very useful to get the message out there.

Uncover SL workshop

This workshop provides an overview of the State Library of NSW, focusing on the library's history and collections. The workshop also introduces library staff to the services provided by the State Library to all NSW public libraries, and to the resources and professional development opportunities available to NSW public library staff through the State Library.

The workshop takes 2 hours.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • understand the role of the State Library
  • have an awareness of what is in the State Library collection
  • use the State Library catalogue to find collection items, including how to find and view digitised collection material
  • understand the services the State Library provides to NSW public libraries
  • use the Public Library Services website for specialist services (egan a multicultural services)
  • identify opportunities for professional development on the Public Library Services website
  • use the Public Library Services website to find sources of information to assist public library staff in delivering services, programs and events to their communities.

Amazing presentation and great information. I will refer patrons to the website and wonderful online content.

Really interesting insight into the history and working of the SL. Loved the opportunity to ask questions.

It was great being exposed to what the State Library offers and how much support and materials there are for customers and public libraries. So much more than I ever thought.
